Did you catch the Sci-Fi Channels miniseries called "Tin Man"? If you didn't, you really missed out-- it was incredible! I think they are replaying it this weekend so you may want to check it out. It's 3 parts, 2 hours each. We recorded it on the DVR. It was so good. We are still talking about it and it's been over for days, that is really rare for a tv show in our house. It's really rare that we would even watch a show together that wasn't Scrubs, given that we all have such different taste but this really captured our imaginations.
It's just so well done. It's the "Wizard of Oz" but it's based on the book with well placed reminders of the movie interspersed. It's rare that an updated version of anything comes anywhere close to the original but they didn't try and compare or outdo, they really spun a new tale. It wasn't modernized in that they dumbed it down or tried to make it gangsta, it was just an honest, wonderful retelling that seemed new. The actors were phenomenal, unknowns except for Richard Dreyfuss (first thing in a long time I've enjoyed watching him in). The characters were really fleshed out, not one dimensional, even the witch showed so many complexities you never saw in the movie.
The thing I really liked about it, other than the whole spiritual spin they put on it, was that they recaptured that feeling you had as a child seeing the movie for the first time. It was scary! Not bloody or campy scary, but honest oh my goodness! How will Dorothy and her beloved friends escape the witch this time? I found myself with my blanket to my mouth shaking and then reminding myself that I am a grown up and you sort of know how it's gonna turn out LOL! That's how well done it was, it just transported you to a wonderful magic land with fantasy and adventure, I really can't say enough about it. You empathized with each of the actors, they were people, not characters. When the Tin Man cried, I cried. The Cowardly Lion was an Empath! Amazing! No wonder he was so afraid, he could feel the evil of the witch. And the Scarecrow, WOW! The depth of each, even Dorothy with Reiki energy, it was delightful.
I just can't get over how good it was. Now, I wouldn't recommend it for younger than 10 year olds but I wouldn't recommend the original for them either. (I know, I'm over protective) If you get a chance to watch it with your kids, Do-- we loved it.
Did anyone else watch it?

I don't have cable. I hope they rent or sell the DVD! You make it sound irresistable!
